Why did Minecraft remove fireflies?

The next major update to Minecraft will be called “The Wild Update” and it will bring a lot of new material related to the natural world. However, there were no fireflies! Mojang received information from players that the little glowing bugs were dangerous to frogs, which led to the decision to remove the little glowing bugs from the scheduled update. The tiny glowing insects were meant to be the food supply for the newly added frogs. Oh!

Although Minecraft is not as young as before, it is still a very popular video game. There are millions of players and a huge amount of content has been added to the game through the dozens and dozens of free updates that have been released over the past decade. The next update for the blocky survival game is called The Wild Update and it will add even more content to the game such as a new mangrove habitat and ancient villages. As is the case with all Minecraft updates, parts of it will be brought to the game in advance through beta builds that players can choose to participate in. Last December, Mojang added frogs. (You can trust me when I say that the fans were really excited.)

Final Thoughts

These were the main points of the video and other information that wasn’t so important, players can watch the whole video. We’re probably getting pretty close to the release of the Wild Update, which was revealed during the Minecraft live event in 2021. We don’t have a release date yet, but we should hear something about its release soon.

What happened to the fireflies in Minecraft?

When fireflies were planned to come to Minecraft, they were originally going to be used as a food source for frogs. However, when fans learned of this, they contacted Mojang to let them know that the bugs are often toxic when consumed by frogs in real life. Similar to the situation in the past where Cookies were found to be able to poison a parrot, the developer decided to completely remove fireflies from the game in favor of making the little Slime the food source for the frogs.

As of this writing, there is no talk of fireflies coming to Minecraft in the future. While they could always find a new use for bugs in the game, that would probably take a bit of work and time. In the case of Parrots with Cookies, Mojang recognized how many young players he has in his fan base, so he wanted to avoid a situation where a young player would feed an actual animal that would feed and harm them. Removing fireflies in the game does the same thing here.
