There are three coordinates in Minecraft: X, Y and Z. Each coordinate indicates the player’s distance from the original spawn point in a different way:
- East – X (positive value)
- West – X (negative value)
- Altitude above origin – Y (positive value)
- Depth below origin – Y (negative value)
- South – Z (positive value)
- North – Z (negative value)

Minecraft Coordinates Explained
Minecraft has three coordinates: X, Y, and Z, just like any other three-dimensional space. Each of these three coordinates determines:
- X: East (+) or West (-). If the value is positive, it means that it is east of the central part of the map. Then the negative value is the opposite, it indicates the West.
- Y: Vertical position. The value will change depending on how much you climb (+) or descend (-) closer to the bedrock. The sea is always at the Y coordinate 64.
- Z: South (+) or North (-). The positive value will increase as you move your position south from the central part of the map. The numbers will turn negative as you travel north.
Preparing to find diamonds
You will need adequate supplies before you start mining diamonds in Minecraft:
- An iron, a diamond or a netherite the pickaxe is needed to mine diamonds. Iron is common in the game, so it’s pretty easy to make an iron pickaxe.
- You will need torches to light up your tunnels and to explore the caves.
- Food is important because extraction over time will cause starvation.
- You will encounter mobs, so an armor and a weapon are useful.
- A shovel is useful for removing dirt and gravel on your way.
- Sticks are important for creating more torches while mining coal.
- Optional: A bucket of water is useful for turning lava into obsidian.
- Optional: Luck Enchanted Pickaxes will increase the amount of diamonds you mine.
Why would you need Minecraft world coordinates?
The world of Minecraft is vast. Technically, it’s almost infinitely vast (at least in the Bedrock Edition) as the world is randomly generated as the player traverses it. There’s a lot of terrain to traverse, but you can also dig underground and fly through the sky.
There are countless points of interest throughout the world of Minecraft, including everything from the world spawn (where it spawns when you first start) and villages to mansions, ruined portals, desert temples and more. One of the most useful things a player can do with coordinates in Minecraft is make notes of where these points of interest are located.
