How to show coordinates in Java
If you’re playing on Java, then you really don’t have a precise way to show coordinates on screen without implementing a mod. Yes, you can see them easily, but you don’t want them to stay on screen while you play because your screen will be covered in text!
To show coordinates in the Java version of Minecraft all you have to do is press F3 on a PC. If you’re on a MAC then you’ll want to try Fn + F3 or Alt + Fn + F3! In some of the newer laptops the first set of keys didn’t work. Here’s what you’ll see after pressing the right buttons:
Minecraft Coordinates Explained
Minecraft features three coordinates: X, Y, and Z, just like any other three-dimensional space. Each of these three coordinates determines:
- X: East (+) or West (-). If the value is positive, it means that it is east of the central part of the map. Then the negative value is the opposite, it indicates the West.
- Y: vertical position. The value will change depending on how much you climb (+) or descend (-) closer to the bedrock. The sea is always at the Y coordinate 64.
- Z: South (+) or North (-). The positive value will increase as you move your position south from the central part of the map. The numbers will turn negative as you travel north.
What are coordinates in Minecraft?
First of all, you need to know what coordinates are in Minecraft. They are a series of numbers that define exactly where your character is in the world.
These numbers or, taken together, coordinates, are very useful because they give you the point of reference not only for where you are but also for where you have been and where you will go.
Why would you need Minecraft world coordinates?
The world of Minecraft is vast. Technically, it’s almost infinitely vast (at least in the Bedrock Edition) as the world is randomly generated as the player traverses it. There’s a lot of terrain to traverse, but you can also dig underground and fly through the sky.
There are countless points of interest throughout the world of Minecraft, including everything from the world spawn (where it spawns when you first start) and villages to mansions, ruined portals, desert temples and more. One of the most useful things a player can do with coordinates in Minecraft is make notes of where these points of interest are located.
