Is there a RTX 4090?

Just a quick recap for those a little late to the party, the GeForce RTX 4090 is NVIDIA’s latest and fastest flagship graphics card. NVIDIA announced its latest RTX 40-series GPUs in September. The company then released the RTX 4090 in mid-October. A month later, the RTX 4080 16GB was released to the market. Oh, NVIDIA also “released” the RTX 4080 12GB after the release of the RTX 4090.

The GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 are the latest and greatest GPUs from NVIDIA based on its new architecture Ada Lovelace. These new GPUs feature 3rd generation RT cores; Fourth generation tensor core; Reordering shader execution; Ada optical flow accelerator; dual NVENC encoders with AV1 support; and DLSS 3 generation technology or AI Frame. DLSS 3 is an exclusive feature of RTX 40 series GPUs.

RTX 4090 Ti is said to consume power

As a more powerful GPU, it would draw more power than the already power hungry RTX 4090 Rumor says the upgraded Ti product will be a triple-slot that draws power from a 16-pin 2X connector for a maximum power requirement of 800. The GPU would operate at 2.355 MHz and 2.625 MHz when boosted, which it will once again require more power from the power supply.

The RTX 4090, as it stands now, already requires at least a 1000W PSU, while the RTX 4090 Ti may need a minimum 1250W PSU, or even more depending on the general PC specifications.

Not a length issue

As a footnote, let me say that may son recently changed to a more “friendly” – in terms of footprint – solution, a case white by LIAN LI, supplier of some interesting cases. It has the LANCOOL-II-Mesh-rgb, an average case in white (also available in black) that I looked at with some envy, not for the RGB lights but for its design, internal space and cooling options. Yet, come to think of it, I’ve never cared much for suitcases, I’ve always looked for a solution that suited my needs, one of which had enough space to fit everything I needed. Until now…

This time there was no need to wait for graphics cards to be available: I ordered an RTX 4090 MSI Gaming Trio X – as I am satisfied with the RTX 3080 I bought from MSI – and I was told delivery would take a matter of days. Having decided to stick with my previous build, using an Intel i7-9700K which continues to be a good all-rounder, I figured I’d just take my RTX 3080 out and put the RTX 4090 back in. The more I thought about it, the more I believed this wasn’t going to work.
