Is Minecraft ok for 13 year olds?

What is Minecraft?

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is what we call a sandbox adventure video game, which means that it provides a creative landscape with no fixed goals or endgames and plenty of possibilities. Its characters have a blocky, chunky, lego-like design that looks pretty childish. Mojang Studios developed this video game in 2011. It is one of the best-selling video games with over 238 million copies sold worldwide and nearly 140 million active users, as of 2021.

The main difference between Minecraft and other video games suitable for children is that it does not have any specific goal for the player to achieve. While other video games have specific goals or objectives, such as Mario rescuing the princess in “Super Mario” or multiplayer racing games such as “Team Sonic Racing”, Minecraft is unique in that it has no storyline, gives you no instruction, and offers instead players have the opportunity to create a world from their own imagination.

Minecraft can be an MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game), which means you can play it with other players online. But you CAN have your own place (Server) that is “invite only” or play solo. The same rules should apply to any MMO your kids play, there are adults playing this game too, so you need to be careful, you need to supervise and you need to educate your kids NOT to make friends with adults, I wouldn’t suggest minors age 13 to play it unless with a supervising adult or on a private server or as a single player.

But safety-wise, this game is very PG. There is no bloodshed, unless you count a pig being turned into a pork chop… see no slaughter etc… no YAY guns and only minor fights with swords, bow and arrows, the most of the time people who play Minecraft are just building stuff and playing with it. You’ll hear things like “Hey, I threw you some mushroom soup”, “Now I have some grain”… “Oh, look at some lead” or something like that… “I’m mining some gold !”…so much better than hearing that guy get killed! KILL KILL, well, other than a few creepers and spiders and you’ll want to avoid or kill them… Yes, you can kill each other but it’s not bloodthirsty, and friends don’t because it takes a long time to build your health back to new… (regenerate)

What is the appropriate age for Minecraft?

There are different answers to this question depending on who you ask. Some recommend players to be at least 8 years old, while others recommend that they be 10. The Entertainment Software Rating Board gives Minecraft a rating of Everyone 10+. This is the American rating system.

Parents should review the game for themselves to determine what age they feel is appropriate for their children. Some parents may think 10 is appropriate while others would allow their children to play 7. The decision is ultimately up to each parent.
