How many FPS is OK?

  • 30 FPS – This is the level of performance usually targeted by budget gaming consoles and PCs. Keep in mind, however, that significant stuttering is only really noticeable below 20 FPS, so anything above 20 FPS can be considered playable.
  • 60 FPS – This is the target for most gaming PCs. On consoles, only less demanding or better optimized games can manage a stable 60 FPS. However, the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X will aim for this in most games.
  • 120 FPS – This is the kind of frame rate that can only be seen on monitors with refresh rates of 120-165Hz. Usually, only powerful high-end gaming PCs can run demanding games at this level of performance without any drop in settings.
  • 240 FPS – This FPS is reserved for the fastest 240Hz monitors. 240 FPS is as high as modern displays.

Optimal game FPS depends on what you want to achieve

For many years, playing games at 30 FPS was more than enough for anyone. However, as technology has advanced, players and developers have tried to make the most of it. Soon, 60 FPS became the new standard for single-player games, while 120 or more became the standard for multiplayer games, especially first-person shooters.

This might lead you to think that more is always better, and while you will certainly have a smoother experience, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the best option for you.
