Raising villagers in Minecraft is simple. You just have to make sure that some conditions are met. First, make sure there are enough beds for both of your villagers to mate, as well as the baby they’re going to make, so at least 3 beds are available.
Villagers must also be willing to mate, and for that to happen, they’ll need enough food (3 bread each or 12 carrots, potatoes, or beets in their inventories). You can simply throw food at them from your inventory. Once they both have enough food, they will become “volunteers” and 2 willing villagers will mate.

Villagers aren’t the only species that can be farmed in Minecraft. You can also raise pets, tame animals, such as horses, donkeys, cows and even bees! Each animal species has different husbandry requirements. So, to raise horses, you have to feed them a golden apple or a golden carrot. Cows, goats and sheep are willing to reproduce after eating grain. The pigs will eat carrots, potatoes and beets, like the villagers, even if you only need one instead of 12.
Farming villagers in version 1.14 and earlier
Find a village. In the game world, villages appear in random locations. There are villages in the plains, desert, and savannah biomes.
There must be at least two villagers. Patience is a virtue. It is not always easy to find villages. Finding one may take some time. Track your location using the map you get at the start of the game.
Track particles
Villagers go into love mode if they have enough food. A mating session consumes about 12 units of food. The player can control these modes by observing the particles above a villager’s head. Hearts indicate love mode while angry particles together with hearts indicate there are not enough beds to mate.
Particle mechanics can be extremely useful in identifying the different traits of villagers. Villagers will also show angry particles if the population limit is reached. You must expand the village in this scenario to accommodate as many villagers as needed.
Tips to keep in mind:
- Always try to cover your windows with iron bars or glass. Little villagers can escape from these small openings which you don’t want.
- The locked door or fence gate is the preferred option to eliminate the chances of escape. As the villagers are able to open and close doors by themselves.
